Advocacy
The Childhood Lead Action Project (Project) promotes lead safe policies through representation on policy-making groups, testimony at legislative hearings and intervention in the regulatory process. The Project serves as a community catalyst in coordinating the Get the Lead Out Coalition (GLOC), a statewide membership network of organizations, agencies and parents of lead poisoned children. Largely due to the efforts of GLOC, Rhode Island has made significant progress in securing protection for children through innovative public policy. Victories include: Won passage of the Lead Hazard Mitigation Act of 2002 after a four year struggle. GLOC brought advocates together to fight for legislation which emphasizes prevention rather than waiting for a child to be poisoned.
Convinced the Rhode Island Department of Health to lower the level for intervening in lead cases from 20 to 15µg/dl. This allows families to obtain home inspections and medical services for children with a lower severity of poisoning.
Advocated for lead safe Section 8 housing in R.I., leading to an MOU (memorandum of understanding) signed by the major housing authorities agreeing to comply with federal and state regulations.
Public education campaigns leading to state appropriations of several million dollars for lead hazard reduction funding, public awareness and staffing for enforcement efforts.
Worked in coalition with other stakeholders to establish the Housing Resources Commission responsible for housing planning and policy for the state.
Served as a catalyst for the State of Rhode Island to pursue its landmark lawsuit against the manufacturers of lead paint. Rhode Island is the first state to take such action.
